Research Grind

So. I have been absent for a while.

I have been stationed in Akureyri for about three weeks. While here I have been working on a research project diving deep into Icelandic culture. What am I researching you might ask? Coffee of course!

Many of us think that Seattle is the coffee capitol of the world, but I believe coffee is a way bigger part of Icelandic society. The first question Icelanders always ask each other is, "Would you like some coffee?" No party is complete without cakes and coffee. It is not what brings the society together per se, but it is always present when community forms.

That being said, the adventures filled days that were abundant at the beginning of my trip have morphed into lazy days of people watching at cafes doing "research." Delightful as it seems, and it actually is a lot of the time, I have been struggling with homesickness. The main reason though is because there is not much to do at night in Iceland, and I don't have my typical community surrounding me. I do have community, but it is not the same because we can't relate on a deeper level. I can only talk on superficial terms for so long. I need to dig deeper, and I need to be able to have fellowship. That being said, I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity, and I plan to seize it to my best ability while still being excited for being back.

Last weekend, we finally got to do some adventuring, but I have way too many photos to share of that so I will stick to just displaying Akureyri for now.

The river behind the Uni//My photo is over exposed because it was so sunny.
I sat here journaling for about an hour. It was about 34 degrees.

I find cats everywhere I go.
 Icelandic cats are the friendliest!
The church and a touch of autumn. Winter came the next day :(
The Church of Akureyri
 Hiking after the snow hit.

My socks weren't high enough so I cut up my ankles on the snow:(

The next post will have photos from my trip to Lake Mývatn! Be excited :)

Cheers,

Stacie Marie
